The Department of Crop Science at Bukura Agricultural College is an academic department charged with the mandate of offering training in crop sciences and agricultural engineering courses. The department has 21 competent academic staff members specialized in various disciplines, who develop curricula for the course programmes offered by the department. Housed in the department are three academic sections i) Agronomy ii) Horticulture and iii) Agricultural Engineering sections.

The department offers three diploma programmes Diploma in Agriculture and Biotechnology, Diploma in Horticulture and Diploma in Agricultural Irrigation and Drainage Engineering; Plus, one certificate course programme; Certificate in Agriculture and Community Development. The department also offers short course modules in various crop value chains i.e. African Leafy Vegetables (ALVs), Groundnut, Passion fruit, and Tissue culture banana and has already developed a curriculum for an Integrated soil fertility management course.

The department has embraced learner learner-centred training approach that aims at graduating hands-on competent trainees through exposure to theoretical and practical training. The Department has developed the requisite infrastructure to offer a comprehensive set of courses including production and management of horticultural, field food and plantation crops; micropropagation and tissue culture; controlled environment crop production; crop physiology and post-harvest technologies; crop pest and disease management; conservation and organic agriculture; agroforestry; irrigation and drainage systems; farm structures; workshop technologies. The Infrastructure includes greenhouses, a tissue culture laboratory, a molecular science lab, fruit and forest tree nurseries, student plots, crop museums and engineering workshops. This infrastructure, in addition to the modern lecture theatres and laboratories amply supports teaching and research in the Department.

To ensure our curriculum remains responsive to the labour market needs, the department guarantees elaborate curriculum review in partnership with the agricultural industry and tracer studies with the BAC alumni. This has ensured that our curricula are well packaged with technical skills, knowledge and attitudes demanded at the workplace. The inclusion of soft skills, entrepreneurial skills, gender sensitiveness, value chain approach, precision agriculture, agricultural biotechnology, research skills, sustainable farming and climate-smart agriculture aspects in our curriculum has given our graduates a competitive edge in the labour market.

Through the interaction with our numerous stakeholders, we recognize some of the greatest challenges facing the farming community including climate change, sustainable food production, soil degradation, depletion of critical aquifers, and emerging pests and diseases. The need to develop solutions to these challenges drives our ambition, dedication, and creativity. The department plays a leading role in exposing trainees to the rapid scientific and technological advancements that are poised to transform and revolutionize agriculture, therefore making it attractive to the youth.

You are assured of competence in your area of training should you choose to study in the Department of Crop Science. Welcome.
