The Biological, Physical & Applied Science department is largely a service department to the other three (3) academic departments namely; Crops Sciences, Animal Health &Production and Agricultural Extension and Community Development. Currently, the Department hosts one Diploma program that is, Diploma in Information, Communication & Technology (DICT).

Its main mandate is to “train, carry out research, innovations and disseminate fundamental scientific knowledge in Physical, Biological and Applied Sciences”. Emphasis is laid on the practical aspect to create a positive attitude towards the foundational courses units offered to students. The department is managed by the Head of the department and is divided into two sections under the heads of    sections as follows: 

1. Biological and Physical Sciences                                      

2. Applied sciences                                           

CORE FUNCTIONS OF THE DEPARTMENT

1. Initiate the development of policies and strategies to enhance academic and teaching standards in the college;

2. Coordinate the administration of all academic matters of the department;

3. Supervise the development and review of training manuals in the department

4. Develop and implement departmental work plans and budgets;

5. Develop and implement annual departmental performance contracts;

6. Conduct periodical evaluations of academic programmes and generate evaluation reports in liaison with heads of sections;

7. Coordinate setting and moderation of examinations in the department

8. Participate in teaching, academic research and consultancy activities

9. Record and disseminate weather data 

10. Establish and maintain a botanical garden

THE STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES OF THE DEPARTMENT 

a) Teach and examine certificate and Diploma course units

b) Achieve 95% student’s pass rate 

c) Conduct timely staff appraisal

d) Cascade service charter

e) Increase customer satisfaction

f) Improve College revenue

g) Record and disseminate weather data 

h) Establish and maintain a botanical garden

DEPARTMENTAL STRENGTH

The department has fifteen (15) members of staff in different areas of specialisation in two sections.

APPLIED SCIENCES SECTION

The Applied Science Section has a mandate to train in ICT & applied sciences within the College. Management of ICT training facilities within the college computer laboratories is the mandate of the section too.

About

Bukura Agricultural College grew from the former Bukura Institute in 1974 under the Ministry of Agriculture with the mandate of offering certificate courses in Agriculture. In 1992, the Institute’s status was upgraded from awarding certificate courses to awarding Diploma courses in Agriculture and renamed Bukura Agricultural College (BAC). Following the enactment of the Bukura Agricultural College Act, Cap.348 of 1999, BAC became a state corporation under the then Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries. The College is currently operating as a State Corporation under the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation.
