DAIRY PROCESSING PLANT

DAVIS KAMAU, ACTING PLANT MANAGER

The department was started in 2016 with the construction of the dairy plant with the assistance of the German government through GIZ project. The plant was established with the twin objectives of:

  • To act as market for commercial farm milk as well as a market for dairy farmers in the region
  • To act as a training unit for college students as well as model processing plant in the region

The plant has a processing capacity of 2000lts per day. We are currently processing over 600 liters per day raw milk into yoghurt, fermented milk (mala) and pasteurized milk.

The department has five members of staff namely; Manager, Dairy Technologist, salesperson and three casual employees.

Achievements

  • Increased the processing capacity from 200lts to the current over 600 liters of milk
  • Opening up market for the college products to new geographical areas and institutions
  • Offering training on value addition to over 1000 farmers in the region
  • Participating and awarded a certificate by Kaizen Africa awards
  • Acquired accreditation and certification by the Kenya Bureau of Standards and the Kenya Dairy Board
  • Entered into agreement with three regional supermarkets namely; Maisha Watoto, Maisha Matt and FrankMatt.

  • MARKETING

    The Section facilitates execution of the College’s Marketing and communication functions. The section Initiate the Development, implementation and review marketing policies and strategies,

  • COMMERCIAL FARM

    The commercial farm lies on 100.4 Ha of arable land suitable for cultivation, pastures and forestry. The soils are classified as Orthic Ferrasol (FAO/UNESCO, 1988) or Oxisol (Soil Survey Staff-1998).The soils are completely weathered and high in organic matter, low in PH and aluminum toxicity do exist.

  • INDUSTRIAL LIASON

    BAC trainees are exposed to a twelve week field/Industrial attachment as part of their learning. The attachment exposes trainees to real life working environment.Through the attachment, trainees are expected to acquire practical training skills,
